Hello and welcome to my website,
I have always had passion for textiles and have explored many different textile techniques, including sewing, knitting, embroidery and lacemaking. I recently discovered felt making at a London craft show and was instantly hooked. I became a member of the International Feltmakers Association and have since attended a number of classes by leading UK and international felt artists. My creations have been on display at exhibitions and craft shows and I have also run felting workshops.
I have been lucky enough to be able to join the Flews group (feltmakers, lacemakers, embroidereres, weavers, spinners) based in Surrey, UK. We are a group of multitalended people with great passion for textile art. We regularly meet at workshops and textile shows and share our knowledge and ideas.
My favourite felting method is nuno felting, where wool fibres are felted through a sheer fabric to create a beautifuly lightweight and soft yet durable felt. This method allows me to experiment with different colours, patterns and textures to create unique, one of a kind garments. I never quite know what the end product will look like and I am always amazed by the beautiful colours and patterns this technique produces.
Some of my bags and hats are made using the ‘Hat on the Ball’ felting technique originally developed by an American artist Beth Beede in the 1970’s. I cover an inflatable ball with wool fibres and silk fabrics and use resists to create internal pockets if required. I then bounce the ball against a hard surface, which causes the wool fibres and silk to felt together to create a lovely seamless nuno felt.
Other bags and hats are made on a flat resist – a template, which is inserted between layers of wool and stops the sides of the hat or bag from felting together.
The final stage of the felting process for bags and hats is blocking – giving them the desired shape. I use a metal block for bags and my grandmother’s vintage 1930’s wooden hat block for hats.
All pieces in my collection are hand made using the finest wool, silk fabrics and silk fibres.
Felting is a time and labour intensive process, but the results are well worth the effort. I hope you will enjoy wearing my creations as much as I enjoyed making them!
